This is the story of a young woman's frightening, and eventually disabling illness, which started as eye problems, vocal problems, then turned into lung, joint, skin, and kidney failure. The illness was finally diagnosed in 1987 Wegener's granulomatosis, and years of aggressive treatment followed with chemotherapy.
Not wanting to sit around, she decided to put her unfortunate life circumstances toward a purpose of helping others and to go to school, but found that this would be another fight, as funders were often opposed to this dream for many reasons. She kept her eye on the prize, and although it was not easy, and oftentimes, suffered health crises throughout college, and graduate school, did obtain her goals by 1995.
This book is written for those who suffer from Wegener's granulomatosis to help them to feel less isolated, or for anyone with obstacles to show it is possible to stay on course with their goals. Although it may seem like you are climbing the highest mountain, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.

Candace tells a compelling story and I could hardly put this book down. Without the support of those who should have been there for her, she managed her disease almost all on her own with some encouragement from a nephew, too young to be of physical assistance but gave great moral support, as did a cousin. Most of the doctors who treated Candace should have their licenses revoked; they were less than effective and didn't believe her complaints had any validity, often blaming her for getting sick. I commend her for have the fortitude to complete her education and go on to graduate school defying unbelievable odds. Her suffering might have been almost bearable if she had been treated properly. I hope sharing her story will open the eyes of those with similar illnesses and encourage them to drop the ineffective doctors seeking instead those who listen and care about their patients. They are out there. I know because my daughter, Carol, who is also a Wegener's granulomatosis patient, was lucky enough to find good ones. Candace's story must have been difficult to commit to paper knowing there would be people who might feel offended. I congratulate her for rising above this with the thought that others might be helped, and thank her for taking the time and making the effort to let the rest of the world know what she went through. I wish her well in the future and know her social work will benefit others because of her positive attitude.

Very interesting, informative and at times, funny. The author effectively conveys her daily experiences in living with this rare disease. Her perceptions are comical and very candid. I felt as though I was reading a letter from a good friend so I did not put the book down. This writing exhibits the power of the human spirit and triumph.
It's a good read to not only get a feel for what this disease is but to experience the emotions of dealing with it.
