A table saw is a woodworking machine that consists of a circular saw blade, mounted on an arbor, that is driven by an electric motor (either directly, by belt). The blade protrudes through the surface of a table, which provides support for the material, usually wood, being cut.

As I write this I realize that there is no way I can mention every saw, feature, accessory, or jig available today. Please read this as it is intended, a guide meant to give you some basic information. It is painted in broad strokes, by a guy who got hooked on woodworking at the age of 12, and has been working at it professionally for over 20 years.

Seven of those years I sold woodworking tools and was lucky enough to work for a company that valued the education of its employees. We had manufacturer’s representatives in frequently to teach us about the latest updates on their tools and equipment. Imagine spending three days at Black and Decker University. Before you look down your nose, remember that B&D owns (well, at the time owned) DeWalt, Delta, Porter Cable and more. Three days of tools, tools and more tools. Oh yeah, there was the trip to Camden Yards, but I digress…

What I present here is my opinion and nothing more. I realize that if you ask ten woodworkers the best way to do something, you will probably get 15 answers, but this is my take on what is what. I have also received input from a handful of highly qualified professionals. By highly qualified, I mean friends of mine who have been in the woodworking industry for years, and were willing to read this before it was published. OK, one or two just looked at the pictures, but their comments were helpful none the less.

One more thing I should mention. Most of the pictures used throughout this book were taken by me, a woodworker. They were taken in a real working shop, and the items shot were all tools, accessories, etc. that I actually use. There are no staged shots, taken in a set dressed up to look like a shop. No “just out of the box” goodies, just my own tools as I use them. OK, I may have dusted them off, but the point is, they’re tools and they are not always pretty. The pretty pictures are stock photos because I don’t have one of everything; at least not yet.

I’d also like to say that while I may mention certain manufacturers in the book, I am in no way promoting them or getting any kickback from them. With that said I am open to long term testing if you are a manufacturer and want to send me something. Just sayin’….

So with that said, read on and pick and choose the information and tips that seem to sit right with you. Share the information with your friends, pass on a tip, or just shove this book under that wobbly table to make it stable again (oh wait, this is an e-book, I guess that won’t work). Did I mention that this should be fun? Please, whatever you do, don’t make woodworking too much like work. It’s way too much enjoyable for that!
