collected poems dealing with growing up as the child of Holocaust survivors

In the Shadow of the Shoah eBook Frieda Landau

Some of these poems touch on experiences that many of us have never known, remembrances of one of the darkest times of human history and those who were lost in the Holocaust and the damage wrought on those who survived. Other poems bring to us the immigrant experience, the wonders and woes of a new land and learning its ways. I smiled as the poet described her love of vocal music, from rock to Schubert to Gershwin, and how her own singing voice doesn't measure up to the words and music, to her dismay. And I wept as she laments her lost love and their happy life together. These poems do what good poetry should do, allows us to experience emotions that the poet experienced first hand.

In the Shadow of the Shoah eBook Frieda Landau Reviews

This book is described as a "book of poems by a person whose parents were Holocaust survivors" - and it certainly does speak to the experience of survivors of the Holocaust and what it was like to be a child of such - but it is so much more than that. I am not Jewish and wondered what might be in between the covers for me; I was given this book as a present, and was very pleasantly surprised at what I found within.

There are many poems that either speak to the Jewish experience in a new land (America I would assume) or else appear to deal with the Holocaust directly; one in particular had a very graphic description of a pregnant woman and what became of her. Hard reading knowing that this was likely based on reality, and is not for the squeamish - perhaps half of the book or so is dedicated to this specific topic.

However, a great many of the poems will resonate with anyone that has ever felt alienated, a sense of not belonging - or the ache of loss, of bittersweet memories of life or love long gone. Several of the poems elicited a very visceral feeling in me, such as "Mountains","Schizophrenia" or (my favorite)"No Mind a Whetstone" - these poems speak to the human condition which we all share, whatever our background.

I'm only a casual fan of poetry, and I was surprised at how many of them I found myself nodding my head to in agreement or sighing at the poignancy of others. The poetry itself is fairly spare in words, whittled down to the bone; she certainly doesn't use 10 words when only 1 will do, but the subject matter she has chosen seems to work very well with this style.

Looking through 's listings for Ms. Landau seem to indicate this is her maiden poetry book - but hopefully not her last.
