More than thirteen million children are now living below the poverty line in the United States. This is indicated in the report of the Annie Casey Charity Foundation, which was published on Tuesday. The document is part and parcel of the regular study of the health and living conditions of children in the United States.
The results of this investigation show that the number of U.S. children living below the poverty line today had increased to eighteen percent in the period after 2000, when this figure equalled to seventeen per cent. Unfortunately, no measures at all are being taken in the country at present to improve the living conditions of children and juveniles, everything is simply at a stand still, President of the Foundation Douglas Nelson says. The report, which is being drawn up annually, includes the following indicators: child mortality, poverty level, and family composition.
The latest document also notes that approximately one third of the U.S. children and juveniles are living in families, where the parents have no permanent jobs. Furthermore, the number of underweight babies has grown up to 7.9 per cent.
One of the few positive indicators, contained in the report, shows that the number of juvenile pregnancies and deliveries has decreased. Whereas in 2000 they added up to 48 per thousand girls, the figure has now dropped down to 42 per thousand, sociologists claim. We are witnessing a continuing reduction of the number of birthgivings among juveniles, but at the same time the number of incomplete families is steadily growing in the United States, Nelson noted.
Specialists of the Annie Casey Foundation had drawn on the data of the U.S. Census Bureau during the compilation of their report."
